Home > Teacher of the Year 2010 Teacher of the Year - Kathy Hammer NCTM

By Dr. Grace Asquith NCTM, CSMTA President | Congratulations to Kathryn Hammer NCTM, who received the 2010 CSMTA Teacher of the Year Award at the Local Association Luncheon on June 4 during the Conference.
With 47 years of teaching experience, Kathy has generously served CSMTA during 30 of those years in various capacities: State Auditions Chair, Vice President for Conferences, Treasurer (10 years!), President-Elect, President, and many untitled volunteer positions. Her local association, Foothills MTA, has benefited from her willingness to help in nearly every facet of the organization since its founding in 1974. In an era of endless choices and constant transitions, Kathy has committed her musical career to providing stability to CSMTA and Foothills, thus offering a perspective unparalleled in this organization. All of her various duties have been carried out with professionalism, establishing herself as an important mentor within the CSMTA/Foothills leadership community.
Dedication to students and their progress is documented in student awards in various Festivals and SPA events, their study in college music degree programs, and their life-long love of music. In a letter of support for Kathy’s nomination for this award, a former student described her lessons in Mrs. Hammer’s studio with great detail. In particular, the former student clearly remembered how carefully Kathy listened, not only to the music, but also to the student. The desire to give focused attention to each student is a key element of her successful studio.
Kathy firmly believes that professional musicians should share their talents with their community. She has a long record of service on the Lakewood Arts Council, Parliamentary Group, churches, and hours upon hours of sharing her musical expertise accompanying student choirs and soloists. In addition, Kathy is a strong supporter of her colleagues attending concerts, student recitals, programs at Local Associations, or Conference sessions. She has given so much of herself through teaching, performing, and leading.
Congratulations, Kathy. May your dedication to music continue to inspire students and CSMTA colleagues!
